Woodlands Area Dentist Explains Dental Crowns and Bridges
Dental crowns and bridges are used in the practice of Dr. Robert G. Dernick of The Woodlands for the restoration and protection of natural teeth. Both are similar in structure but have different purposes.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns, which some patients refer to as “caps,” are fabricated to bond over the top of a natural tooth. This is done for several reasons. It can be used to disguise an imperfection such as breakage or a permanent stain, provide strength and stability to a tooth that has recently experienced trauma or root canal therapy, or it can be used to place over the top of a dental implant to act as a false tooth when a natural tooth is missing. Dental crowns are also bonded to false teeth called pontics to create a porcelain bridge.
Dental Bridge
A dental bridge is a restoration made with dental crowns and pontics. They are used to restore the smile after tooth loss. The pontics are made to rest where the natural teeth was, while the dental crowns are fused together and bonded over the adjacent teeth to hold the pontics in place. This is a permanent method of replacing missing teeth and is sometimes considered over alternative solutions including dental implants and partial dentures. Patients can discuss the possibility of having dental bridges instead of these other options.
Dr. Robert G. Dernick, DDS consults with his patients to discuss the many ways they can restore their smiles, protect their teeth, and address missing teeth within the dental arch. Patients are encouraged to have a hand in developing their own dental treatment plan to bring their smile back to health and improve their appearance as well.
